Drum roll, please….. The Creative Simple Life Etsy store is officially open! After many weeks of planning, researching, testing recipes, and writing product descriptions, I’m excited to announce that the new Creative Simple Life Etsy store is finally open for business! Please stop by and check it out: http://www.CreativeSimpleLife.Etsy.com A Bit of History Shortly after beginning this blog, I decided to expand my interest in making food from scratch to experimenting with creating homemade skin care products. I found the process to be equally as rewarding and, after many months of reading, research, and trial-and-error recipe and product testing, the Creative Simple Life Etsy store was born! Just as the process of creating homemade skincare products has nourished me, I hope my customers will find my skincare line to be an equally nourishing part of their daily self-care practice. At the new Etsy store you can find homemade face serums, salves, all-natural deodorant, scented moisturizers, lip balms, cleansers, body oils, and more! 5 Steps to a Blissful De-Stressing Bath

After traveling on and off for the past three weeks, I arrived home yesterday to the very welcome sights of my own bed and my bathtub. We had a particularly stressful flight home (the kind where everyone cheers and embraces when you land) and I was ready to de-stress and wash away the anxiety of a day’s worth of air travel. Taking a bath is a wonderful way to relax the mind and body and promote healing. And since the inspiration for this post came about while I was soaking in the tub last night, I venture to say that baths are great for promoting creativity as well! In the post that follows I introduce my 5 bathtub staples to get you started on the road to a blissful de-stressing bath. 5 Ingredients for Bath Time Bliss 1. Epsom Salts: Also known as magnesium sulfate, epsom salts dissolved into your bath will deliver your body a healthy dose of magnesium which is known for its miraculous healing abilities. Magnesium helps to relax the nervous system, promote better sleep, restore the body’s pH balance, and create optimum hydration. Basically, you can’t go wrong and according to Dr. Carolyn Dean, author of The Magnesium Miracle, many of us are deficient in this important electrolyte. For optimum benefit, add 2 cups of epsom salts to your bath. 2. Candles: This step is all about ambiance, baby. You’re worth it, so turn the lights down, light some votives, and set the mood. 3. Lavender Essential Oil: Lavender has been used to counter anxiety, stress, sleeplessness, and depression. While it can be added directly to your bath water, I prefer to mix it first with some milk or cream for an extra decadent treat. To do this, add 8 drops of lavender essential oil to a cup of milk or a half cup of cream and add this mixture to the tub. Alternatively, add a few pumps of Creative Simple Life’s Lavender 4-in-1 Face & Body Oil to your bath for some deep moisturizing. 4. Milk: The proteins, fats, and amino acids in milk help to soothe and moisturize skin, making it an especially great addition for skin with sunburn or eczema. As mentioned above, it’s also a great carrier (due to its fat content) in which to dilute essential oils. Add a cup of whole milk to your tub or half a cup of cream. 5. Chamomile Tea: Don’t get into the tub without your beverage of choice. For me, this was a hot cup of chamomile tea, which is wonderful for promoting sleep and relaxation. But I know what you are thinking, and yes, this step could just as easily be replaced with a glass of wine. You decide. Bath Time Do’s and Don’ts Once you are in the tub, there are few things that I recommend (or don’t). I’ve outlined them below. Do: Make sure those you live with know what you are up to and that you’re not to be disturbed. Feel free to add more hot water to the tub if it cools off before you’re ready to get out. Remind yourself how lovely you are. This is no time for self-deprecation. Stay in until you get wrinkly. Why not? Brown Sugar Vanilla Body Scrub

I’ve always loved giving homemade gifts for holidays, birthdays, special occasions, and for no particular reason at all. This year for the holidays, I decided to only give handmade gifts. All the ladies in my family received Organic Brown Sugar & Vanilla Body Scrub. It was easy to whip up, smelled good enough to eat (and frankly it was), and made my dry winter skin super-soft. Here’s my recipe: Ingredients 1/2 cup organic dark brown sugar 1/2 cup organic sugar 4 Tablespoons organic coconut oil 2 Tablespoons organic olive oil (you can use less olive and more coconut oil, which is a liquid above 75°, if you are fortunate enough to live somewhere that is perpetually tropical) 1/2 of a Madagascar vanilla bean OR 15 drops of vanilla essential oil 6 Vitamin E capsules Directions 1. Mix the sugars, oils, and vitamin E in a bowl. 2. Mix in the vanilla essential oil if you are using it. If using the vanilla bean instead, cut the half into 2 or 3 pieces and stick the pieces into your mixture to allow the vanilla to infuse into the sugar. (Another option if you plan ahead is to slice the bean in half and stick it in your sugar for a few weeks to infuse) 3. Pour your scrub into a container of your choosing and prepare for silky soft skin. If you are not sure what to do with your leftover vanilla beans, the Two Tarts blog which I’ve recently discovered has some great suggestions that I’m looking forward to trying. Among my favorites are their recipes for homemade vanilla extract & vanilla sugar, which is as simple as burying your beans in your sugar bowl for one week or longer. I couldn’t have pulled off the making or gifting of this scrub without the help of Rebecca’s Apothecary, where I purchased the containers for the scrub as well as the vanilla beans I used in it. After making this scrub and my homemade peppermint lip balm, I can’t imagine ever living somewhere without a local apothecary. Hopefully I won’t ever have to! Homemade Peppermint Lip Balm

My first adventure in homemade lip balm has been a huge success. I adapted a recipe from Simple Gifts: 50 Little Luxuries to Craft, Sew, Cook & Knit and was super happy with the results. Since this recipe calls for beeswax, and I’d heard that beeswax can be tricky to work with, I found a cheap ($1.99) pot from my local thrift store to use solely for the purpose of making homemade beauty products. I purchased all of my supplies from a local apothecary, which I recently discovered and immediately became enamored with: Rebecca’s Herbal Apothecary & Supply. It’s a completely enchanting shop and worth checking out the next time you are in the Boulder area. As always, I recommend sourcing as much of your project materials from local businesses whenever possible. With my new used pot and my supplies in tow, I was ready to enter the world of DIY beauty products. I used the following recipe which will fill six 1/2 ounce lip balm tins: Ingredients: 2 Tbsp (22.5 grams) beeswax chips 2 Tbsp (28.7 grams) shea butter 3-4 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil (Use less for a thicker balm) 3 vitamin E capsules 25 drops of peppermint essential oil You’ll also need: Six 1/2 ounce (15ml) tins to pour the mixture into (You can also use more smaller containers or fewer larger ones. Aim to buy 3 ounces worth of containers or reuse old chapstick tubes, tins, or jars.) Cheap-o pot or pan or a double boiler (an old glass bowl or glass Pyrex measuring cup would serve this purpose nicely) A regular pot (only for water) Metal Tongs (for sterilizing your tins; a colander will also suffice) Cookie sheet Metal spoon Measuring spoon Sterilizing the tins: 1. You’ll want to start by sterilizing your tins (skip this step if using plastic tubes) . Preheat your oven to 200°. In the meantime, place the tins in a pot and fill with water to cover. Bring to a boil and turn off the heat. Allow them to sit for a few minutes before fishing them out with your metal tongs. If you don’t have tongs (or this seems tedious) you can pour the whole thing through a colander and then pick them out with your hands once they are cool (this is what I did). 2. Place the tins on a cookie sheet and slide into the oven for 10 minutes, or until dry. Voilà: clean tins! Now you are ready to melt the beeswax. Making the lip balm: 1. The first step in this recipe is to melt the beeswax chips and the shea butter. The recommended method for this is to use a double boiler to reduce the risk of burning the oils. Since I didn’t have a double boiler, I used the heavy-bottomed pot that I found at the thrift store and melted the beeswax and shea butter over VERY low heat, stirring almost constantly. This process took close to 20 minutes, so be patient if you are using this method. If you have a double boiler, use it. Even a glass bowl or a Pyrex measuring cup that you can set inside a pan of boiling water will work great. 2. Once these two ingredients are melted, add the olive oil. Continue stirring until all three ingredients are melted together. 3. Remove from heat and squeeze the punctured vitamin E capsules into the mixture. Add the essential oil and stir gently. This mixture tends to cool quickly and the beeswax will begin to solidify. Work quickly, or come back to your stove burner for...
